Fighting rain and cold weather the last two weeks, the Mason Track & Field teams showcased some muscle and grace at the Milford and Brighton Relays.
Last Friday at Milford, the Mariners swept the shot put competition for both boys and girls. On the girls side, Olivia O’Brien led the way with the meet’s farthest throw of 34 feet 9.5 inches. Joining O’Brien on the 1st place team were DeLana Willett (28’3″) and Taryn Webb (30’7″).
Not to be outdone, the Mason Boys team of Marcos Kuecken (36’6″), Anthony Gonzalez (34’4″) and Ronnie Contreras (35’8″) led the pack and took home the hallowed first-place t-shirts as well.
Yesterday at Brighton, the girls team was at it again, posting first place in both shot put and high jump despite low temperatures. For the second invitational in a row, Olivia O’Brien took home top honors with a throw of 32 feet 9.5 inches. Her teammates came through again with supporting throws from Taryn Webb (30’9″) and DeLana Willett (27’6″) helping secure medals for the trio.
In the high jump, the Mariners had another standout performance from MacKenzie Cortese in the high jump. Cortese earned a 1st place trophy with her jump of 4 feet 6 inches. Janae Dalling (3’10”) and Tyanna Jordan (4’0″) joined Cortese as the winning team amongst a strong group of competitors.
Though the boys team could not muster a group first place, Marcos Kuecken did take home a trophy with the best throw of the day at 40 feet 5 inches. Way to go Mason!
The Mariners are back in action next Tuesday (@ Parker MS) and Thursday (@ Oak Valley) before gearing up for the Oakland County Meet. The team says goodbye to their 8th graders heading to Washington D.C. this week and wish them a great time!
