Thursday, after a long list of cancellations and postponements, the Mason Track & Field teams finally had their first dual meet of the year against White Lake Middle School. The team has split results with the girls team winning 89-63 while the boys team fell by a score of 61-81. Weather was a factor all afternoon with chilly temperatures and on and off rain making for a long evening.
On the girls side, highlights included sweeping the shot put, the long jump, and all four relay races. First place finishes were achieved by Kenzie Cortese in the 1600M, Selena Cruz in the 70M, Olivia O’Brien in the Shot Put, and Dmahrya Clayton in the Long Jump. Cortese, Alliya Marquez, Ashley Carver, and Maureen Jenkinson teamed up for the 4x800M Relay, Sam Smith, Roma Graham, Hailey Clark and Cruz won the 4x200M Relay, Leslie Ramirez led off Marquez, Carver and Jenkinson in the 4x400M Relay, and the meet was capped of when Lauren Maybee, Graham, Clark and Drai Hall secured victory in the 4x100M Relay.
For the boys side, although the overall result was unfavorable, highlights from the meet included double victories by Anthony Gonzales in the 400M and 800M runs and Desmond Herring in the 70M and 100M dashes. First place finishes were also earned by Robert Patten in the 55M Hurdles, Marcos Keuken in the Shot Put, and the 4x400M Relay team.
The Mariners are next in action Friday at Milford HS for the Milford Relays. The girls team is current defending champions and are hoping to compete once again for the title. Good luck Mason!
